SUMO Cannabis is ready to begin operations, as today marked the completion of construction at the Parent Boulevard facility. The team will now move forward with obtaining the necessary permits from Health Canada.
“In 2019, we introduced the idea of producing premium cannabis, carefully cultivated with attention to detail, right here in Trois-Rivières. We then sought private investors to help bring this project, which is very close to our hearts, to life. After several months, we are pleased to announce that construction at the former International Sleep Center site is now complete and that we are ready to begin aeroponic cannabis cultivation!” proudly stated Eric Morel, General Manager of SUMO Cannabis.
Aeroponic cultivation has proven effective for various crops, including lettuce, in many parts of the world. Still relatively unknown in the cannabis production industry, aeroponics is considered an innovative and environmentally responsible growing method. “This type of cultivation requires less water, less energy, no growing medium, and fewer nutrients, since the roots are misted above ground.
Aeroponics is recognized as an eco-responsible approach, notably because it reduces the risk of pest infestations and pathogens on plants. Here at the facility, we will begin production with two four-storey grow rooms. However, the building was designed from the outset to allow for the future operation of additional grow rooms,” added Mr. Morel.
Throughout every stage of construction, nothing was left to chance. Equipment disinfection rooms, a nursery, sorting rooms, secure storage areas, and employee changing rooms designed to meet pharmaceutical-grade hygiene and sanitation standards everything has been carefully planned. The next step is to obtain the long-awaited cannabis production license from Health Canada. The second phase of the project will involve securing a processing license to allow for sales, extraction procedures, and packaging.
At that stage, SUMO Cannabis also intends to enter the medical cannabis market.
“We are eager to present our facilities to Health Canada. The construction of our production plant was carefully thought out down to the smallest details, and we are excited to showcase the results of our hard work!” Mr. Morel added.
In the near future, high-quality cannabis bearing the SUMO name and cultivated right here in Trois-Rivières could be available at the Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC).
